Common Questions
What are the steps to set up a business in the UAE?
Determine your business activity → choose a legal structure (LLC, sole proprietorship, branch) → select jurisdiction (Mainland, Free Zone, or Offshore) → reserve a trade name → apply for initial approval → draft legal documents (MOA, lease) → submit to DET or Free Zone authority to receive your licence.
What is a Mainland entity?
A Mainland company is registered with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). It allows you to trade freely anywhere in the UAE and internationally. Foreign investors can now enjoy 100% ownership for most activities. Ideal for government contracts or physical retail.
What is a Free Zone company?
A Free Zone offers 100% foreign ownership, full repatriation of profits, and no import/export duties within the zone. Each Free Zone caters to specific industries. Free Zone companies generally cannot trade directly on the UAE mainland without a local distributor.
Can I set up an Offshore company in the UAE?
Yes. Offshore entities (International Business Companies) can be set up in JAFZA or RAKEZ. They are used for asset protection, tax planning, or holding structures. They cannot conduct business within UAE mainland and do not provide residency visas.
Do I need to be physically present in the UAE?
Not always. Many Free Zone jurisdictions allow remote incorporation. However, for Mainland companies or to complete medical tests and biometrics for Emirates ID and residency visas, a visit is eventually required. We minimise your travel and handle most paperwork remotely.
